A stout herb, 1.5-3.0 m in height. Roots very stout; radical leaves long-petioles, very large, often 60 cm in diameter, orbicular or broadly ovate; petioles 30-45 cm long; flowers small, dark-purple or pale-red, in tall, auxiliary panicles. Pungent and bitter, increases secretion and discharge of urine, purgative, astringent. Locally in India, roots are used to treat chronic constipation. Indian Olibanum tree is a moderate-sized to large, deciduous tree with a light, spreading crown and somewhat drooping branches. It usually has a short bole, 3-5 m in length, sometimes longer if grown in a fully stocked forest. Ordinarily, it attains a girth of 1.2-1.8 m and a height of 9-15 m. Bark is very thin, greyish-green, ashy or reddish with a chlorophyll layer beneath the thin outer layer, which peels off in thin, papery flakes. This tree yields a fragrant resinous substance known as Koondricum. It is bitter and pungent, and is soluble in ether and spirits of wine. Resin exudes from wounds in the bark. The bark is sweet, cooling and tonic. It is good in vitiated conditions of Pitta, cough and asthama. It is useful in fevers, urethrorrhea, diaphoresis, convulsions, chronic laryngitis, jaundice and arthritis.
